Just a quick update- I am scheduled for surgery tomorrow at 8 am. The procedure is an ORIF which stands for Open Reduction Internal Fixation. They will make a small incision on my wrist near the thumb, realign the bone fragments, and fix them together with a small plate and screws. This will allow for wrist movement when the bone heals.
We are hoping to get on the road again about a week if all goes well. We are planning to follow routes 2 and 20, starting with the Mohawk Trail in Massachusetts. Those 60 some miles comprise the earliest scenic highway in New England, and is home to beautiful scenery and historic roadside attractions. From there, we will continue through New York, skimming the top of the Finger Lakes. Northern Ohio and the Indiana Dunes area will follow on our way to meet our daughter and daughter in law in Illinois on Memorial Day.
As we were reminded very recently, even the best laid plans are subject to change. For the next several days, I will need to do everything I can to get my recovery off to a good start. Please pray/ send positive energy and include the surgeon in your thoughts. He is by far the most compassionate and kind orthopedic surgeon I have ever met in my 40 years as a nurse. I told him this and he replied, “ Well, most of us are a**holes”, which I suppose is what I was implying but I never would have said that in so many words. In any case, he is a peach and if you ever break a bone in Scranton, I can give you a great resource.
Although this detour was unplanned, and a bit uncomfortable on my part, there have been a few blessings:
I was able to see my azaleas in full bloom. The pink one right outside my dining room window is host to a hummingbird who eats dinner the same time we do.
Tom was able to do some more tweaking on the van to take care of some things that have been bugging him the last few weeks.
We will be able to see a part of the country we were not planning to visit this trip and will still be able to double back to the places we had planned to visit this past week.
I was reminded of the tremendous blessing of having someone to lean on and being that someone for another person
Life is good.
Hi Chris! I've been following your blog since you started - I agree with Amy, you're a great writer. I got to see Amy and Donna last year, and I was planning to try to catch up with you when I saw your trip. It's fun going along for the ride! Sending prayers for a quick recovery and return to safe travels. Maybe we can catch up when your trip is finished?
Peace and Love.
